Internationalised Domain Names, or IDNs, are web addresses in your own language, written using local language characters. Domains are usually written with the standard ASCII characters – letters A to Z, numbers 0 to 9 and the hyphen. But so many languages have characters that are not used in English that a system has been developed to translate these foreign characters into standard ASCII, via an algorithm known as Punycode. This can translate a Unicode string into a string of characters allowed in hostname labels (ASCII letters, digits and hyphens) and back again.
Value for Your Customers
As the Internet grows, more and more users will prefer languages other than English. IDNs provide an excellent way for users to access Web sites in their local language. IDNs are an opportunity to cross the language borders on the Internet and transform it into a global multilingual tool.
For all companies, from local businesses to global enterprises, a digital presence on the Internet is crucial for success. A domain name is the foundation stone for this presence. IDNs allow companies effectively to reach their markets in their customers' local language. IDNs enable your customers to extend and protect their online identity in local markets around the world.
Target markets more effectively with IDNs
IDNs allow companies to reach their target markets more effectively, by using the customer’s preferred language. Gone is the need to translate or transliterate brand names into English characters for use in internet addresses. With IDNs, brand recognition is strengthened and the user experience is improved.
