After the 5 September 2016, Ficora (Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority) will change to a new registry-registrar model, which allows anyone to registar a .fi domain now. Furthermore, your registrar is responsible for all .fi domain names and related relationships and services. FICORA continues to be responsible for the technical operation of fi-domain names and will supervise and guarantee that registrars offering fi-domain name services provide the highest quality of service.
Timetable for the change of operational model
- On 2 September 2016 at 4:15 p.m. (EEST: UTC+3) all the user accounts in the current domain name service will be closed.
- On 5 September 2016 at 10 a.m. (EEST: UTC+3) the new domain name service will open for registrars that have registered.
- On 7 September 2016 at 10 a.m. (EEST: UTC+3) the domain names that are forbidden by the Domain Name Act will be released.
What will change?
- Each domain name holder must have their own registrar.
- Only the registrar can enter domain names into FICORA’s domain name register on behalf of its customers, make changes to domain names and must submit a registration to FICORA.
- Registrar will be new point of contact for all .fi domain services: applying, renewing, transferring, switching registrars, terminating, and updating details.
- Everyone can apply for domain names
- Removal of local presence requirement
- Foreign private persons and companies can be users of .fi domain names, and the age limit of 15 years is removed.
- In the new model, everyone can apply for combinations of first and last names (firstnamelastname.fi).
- Removal of local presence requirement
- It is no longer possible to register or modify fi-domain names via FICORA.
What will remain?
- FICORA maintains the register of domain names ending with .fi and supervises the fi-domain name registrars’ operations.
- FICORA continues to maintain the domain name register and the domain name system for the fi-root. The protection of trademarks and business names also remains the same.
- FICORA continues to resolve disputes free of charge at the request of right holders.
- The fi-domain name remains a safe and reliable Finnish choice.
